Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai, on an important and ancient trade route from China, was founded by King Mengrai in 1296. It remained largely isolated from the outside world thanks to the rugged high mountains covered with huge unexplored forests teeming with wildlife. It was only in 1920 that a rail link was completed and Chiang Mai emerged to the outside world.
This historic city retains much of its old traditional charm. Perhaps its greatest resource is its deeply Buddhist and courteous people.
Chiang Mai, also known as "The Rose of the North", has all (and more) of the facilities one would expect of Thailand's second city, widely catering to the growing numbers of foreign residents.
Living standards are extremely high and living costs extremely low making this an attractive area in which to retire.
There are plenty of facilities for the expats here including an Expats Club, 'The Pub' (voted best pub in asia by Time Magazine) and The Gymkhana Club (established in 1898) which has golf, squash, tennis and snooker.
Along with the numerous local markets there are Carrefour, Tesco Lotus, Big C and Makro. Two huge modern shopping malls which include multiplex cinemas. Specialist wine merchants and European delicatessen.
There are other world class (and affordable) golf courses all around the city.
Chiang Mai boasts six Universities and six International schools.
There are cultural activities, theatre and concerts and a large number of festivals throughout the year.
The city and surrounding area has many five star hotels and restaurants surpassing international standards.
The world class medical and dental hospitals are now attracting visitors enjoying the low cost of top class treatments.
